About Greenbelt Trail Conservation Area

Greenbelt Trail Conservation Area

The Greenbelt Trail Conservation Area is a 12.8-mile greenway encompassing forests, wetlands, and meadows predominantly within Prince George's County, Maryland. Managed by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, it preserves a significant corridor of natural land amid one of the Washington metropolitan area’s most developed regions. The area is oriented around the Greenbelt Trail, a recreational loop that passes through mature hardwood forests, riparian zones, and open space corridors connecting local parks and neighborhoods. The ecology includes oak-hickory forests, mixed hardwood wetlands, and habitats for species such as white-tailed deer, red fox, barred owls, and a variety of migratory songbirds. Historically, parts of the trail corridor were farmland and suburban holdings that were set aside in the 1970s to provide natural refuge and outdoor recreation for the growing population. Visitors enjoy hiking and trail running on well-maintained paths, mountain biking on designated sections, birdwatching, and seasonal nature study. Notable landmarks include the Patuxent River tributaries that cross beneath the trail and the Greenbelt Lake area offering waterside scenery. Proximity to the Greenbelt Metro Station allows for easy access, making it a popular destination for day use, especially on weekends. The area’s blend of suburban convenience with natural escape draws local families, outdoor enthusiasts, and birders year-round.
